Ikea Trials Online Store for Secondhand Furniture

Ikea is testing out a new online store allowing customers to buy and sell its secondhand furniture.

The resale store — dubbed Ikea Preowned — is currently up and running in Oslo and Madrid, with the company planning to decide on next steps after December. On its website, the store outlines a goal to cut back on waste and keep Ikea furniture out of landfills, as part of a larger effort from the company to "reduce resource use and transition to a circular business."

On Ikea Preowned, buyers can add preowned items to their online cart, and check out with no additional fee. The buyer and seller then agree on a time and place to meet up, with the seller having the option of accepting the item at pick-up or cancelling it and getting refunded. Sellers can then choose to get paid via a bank transfer, or opt for an IKEA gift card with an extra 15% added. Ikea will recommend a listing price based on the item’s condition and the original value, but sellers can set their own price. On average, Ikea advises, secondhand items sell for about half the original price.

It's currently free to list an item, although the CEO of Ikea's parent company told the Financial Times that a "symbolic fee" could be added sometime in the future.
